Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Review: Apple’s Biggest iPhone Ever – But Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Introduction

Apple’s top-tier iPhone is back — bigger, more powerful, and packed with features. The iPhone 16 Pro Max arrives with the largest display ever on an iPhone, a stronger A18 Pro chip, a bigger battery, faster charging, and camera upgrades that make it a serious contender for the best smartphone of 2024.

This year, Apple finally enlarged the Pro screens for the first time since the iPhone 12 series. The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED makes the Pro Max a true multimedia beast, while still being only 1mm wider than last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max thanks to slimmer bezels.

What’s New Under the Hood

Powering the phone is Apple’s new A18 Pro chip, boasting a faster six-core CPU, an upgraded GPU with hardware-based ray tracing, and wider memory bandwidth for AI-driven tasks under the new Apple Intelligence banner.

On the camera side, the 48MP main and 12MP 5x telephoto stick around, but the big change is a new 48MP ultrawide sensor. Add 4K120fps video recording, spatial video clips, studio-quality mics, and Apple’s brand-new Camera Control key, and photography fans are in for a treat.

Battery & Charging

The 16 Pro Max packs a 4,685mAh battery, up from last year’s model, delivering over 17 hours of active use time. Wired charging tops out around 30W (50% in 30 minutes), while the new MagSafe 2.0 boosts wireless charging speeds up to 25W (or 15W with Qi2). Reverse wired charging is also supported.

Design & Build

At first glance, it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but there are subtle changes. The titanium frame is now Grade 5, stronger and more premium. The new Desert Titanium joins the Black, White, and Natural Titanium finishes. The front is protected by 3rd-gen Ceramic Shield, said to be twice as tough as before, and the phone is IP68 certified (survives 6m underwater for 30 minutes).

Despite its size, the matte finish and oleophobic coating make it comfortable to handle, though not entirely grippy.

Display

The crown jewel is its 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED — the biggest ever on an iPhone. It supports 120Hz ProMotion, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and can reach up to 2,456 nits peak brightness in testing. True Tone and Always-On Display are also here.

Software: iOS 18 & Apple Intelligence

The iPhone 16 Pro Max runs iOS 18, which introduces deeper home screen personalization and finally brings a fresh look to iOS. Apple Intelligence — Apple’s new AI suite — will arrive soon, but it won’t be available initially in the EU and China.

Audio & Performance

With stereo speakers and Apple’s Taptic Engine, the phone delivers excellent sound and haptics. Performance is class-leading thanks to the A18 Pro chip, which Apple says is 20% faster while using less power than the A17 Pro.

Gaming and multitasking benefit from the 6-core GPU and upgraded cooling system. Benchmarks confirm: it’s the fastest iPhone ever.

Cameras

  • Main: 48MP (with sensor-shift OIS)
  • Telephoto: 12MP, 5x optical zoom
  • Ultrawide: 48MP (new)
  • Front: 12MP + 3D depth sensor

Low-light ultrawide shots aren’t perfect, but overall, the iPhone 16 Pro Max delivers stunning photos and videos. The addition of 4K120fps and ProRes formats makes it a filmmaker’s dream.

Competition

The biggest competition? Apple itself. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is nearly identical in design and performance but now cheaper. The iPhone 16 Plus is also tempting — it’s big, powerful, and more affordable, though it lacks ProMotion and the 5x telephoto camera.

Verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro Max isn’t a massive leap from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If you already own last year’s model, there’s little reason to upgrade. But if you’re coming from an iPhone 13 or older, this is a fantastic all-rounder flagship with top-notch build, incredible display, excellent cameras, and blazing-fast performance.

Pros:

  • Premium titanium design
  • Gorgeous near bezel-less 6.9-inch display
  • Great battery life & faster wireless charging
  • Excellent speakers and haptics
  • Powerful A18 Pro chip
  • Impressive cameras with new ultrawide

Cons:

  • Apple Intelligence limited by region
  • Not a huge leap over iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • Ultrawide struggles in low light

👉 Final Take: If you want the ultimate iPhone experience, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the one to get. Just don’t expect earth-shattering upgrades if you already own last year’s flagship.
